 Introduction

491 Canboro Road West, in Fenwick, is a municipally significant building located at the corner of Canboro Road and Memorial Drive. Old Pelham Town Hall was constructed in the late 1800s when the Township gained the right to manage their own affairs. Today, the building serves the community as a community centre and gathering place for local activities, clubs, and as the base for the Town’s archives.

The two and a half story building features a front gabled roof, with a projecting gabled entranceway that has similar slope and pitch to the main building. The door and windows of the front façade are framed by pentagonal angular stone arches and stone lintels (hoodmolds). The double hung 4 over 4 windows are symmetrical to each side of the entrance. The panels surrounding the two windows are marked with dentils above. More pronounced dentils run across on the panels’ top side and tighter diagonal dentils ornament the corners. The roof is accentuated by modillions in pairs of two. An extension on the north side is subordinate in mass and complimentary to the existing design.

The Town of Pelham is seeking proposals from qualified masonry restoration contractors to assess, clean, and undertake localized repairs to the building's exterior masonry and foundation. Given the age and heritage significance of the structure, all work must follow best practice conservation approaches, including the investigation and identification of deteriorated masonry, mortar, and foundation areas requiring repair. Proposed cleaning methods, repair techniques, and materials must be appropriate for historic masonry and designed to preserve the defining architectural elements of the building while ensuring its long-term durability and continued use by the community. Funds for this project are granted by the Rual Ontario Development Program to celebrate Fenwick heritage.
